Symphony No.6
2024 | Charcoal and Soft pastel on primed wood | 70 cm x 80 cm
“I used charcoal on wood and not on paper. This is the first time I’m experimenting with charcoal material on this surface. The wood is non-porous, making it extremely challenging for charcoal particles to adhere to it. This wouldn’t be possible without the material I use to prepare the surface. I remained in a state of tension and attraction with the surface of the painting until I achieved this final result. Will I repeat this material on this surface? The answer is yes, but only in areas that do not exceed 70 cm per side.” – Ali Hassaan

Ali Hassaan employs the grisaille technique in some of his portraits. With this technique, he paints in pure shades of gray to achieve a sculptural effect. By abstaining from color, he directs the focus towards the forms, lines, and details, resulting in a compelling portrayal. The use of light and shadow generates a strong contrast and imparts a special atmosphere to the portraits, evoking a classical touch reminiscent of past centuries.
He adeptly utilizes various shades of gray to express the structure and characteristics of the depicted individuals. While no brushstrokes are discernible, each detail is meticulously crafted to create an impressive representation.
The portraits impress with their meticulousness, illusory depth, and distinctive atmosphere. His painting technique allows him to create a unique aesthetic that captivates the viewer.
