about

Aly Hassan, born in 1970, graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, Department of Painting, in 1997. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts, followed by a PhD in the Philosophy of Painting from the same faculty. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Painting Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Luxor.

He moved to live in the city of Luxor many years ago, and this city has had a significant impact on the themes he explores in his work.
Hassan began observing and addressing the visual elements of southern Egypt — its people and places — in a contemporary and interactive manner. He did not stop at superficial observation but delved deeply into the intellectual and symbolic dimensions of what he encountered, which is reflected in the works he produced.

His artworks address environmental issues and contemporary problems facing humanity globally. Many questions arise for the viewer through the artworks, and the viewer attempts to find answers by exploring the arrangement of elements and symbols used within the framework of the composition — whether through diffuse lighting, undefined color sources, artistic techniques, or layered colors and media.

These questions ultimately spark a direct dialogue with the viewer in some parts of the artwork and a more subtle one in others.
The elements in his work are familiar to the human eye from everyday surroundings, but they are presented within a unique context that creates a sense of astonishment, combined with visual beauty stemming from the density of elements and the prolonged engagement required to view the piece.

Hassan has held numerous solo exhibitions in Egypt and participated in many group exhibitions in Egypt, the Arab world, and Europe.
His works are included in the collections of several cultural institutions, including: the Nile Museum in Aswan, the Fine Arts Sector, the Ministry of Culture, the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, as well as in the collections of governmental and non-governmental institutions, banks within Egypt, and with individuals and cultural centers across the Arab world and Europe.
